Foster Care Week 2011
This year Foster Care Week was from the 11-17 September.
It commenced with the annual FREE Foster Care Family Carnival Day and AbSec was proud to continue its involvement as a committee member for this successful event.
AbSec took part in 3 events held in NSW- Homebush, Bathurst and Dubbo.
Foster Care Week Carnival Day – Homebush
This year’s Carnival Day celebrating Foster Care Week was a great success. Held on Sunday 11 September 2011 at Homebush, it was enjoyed by many foster carers and their families. Aunty Ali Golding conducted a beautiful Acknowledgement of Country to open the day. The Jelly Bean Guessing competition was held during the day, with many carers and children having a guess on how many jelly beans were in the jar – luckily for 2 young sisters in care – they guessed the winning amount of 2813 jelly beans. Other lucky winners received one of two mp4 players and a Kmart Voucher.
Foster Care Week Event – Bathurst
Bathurst celebrated NAIDOC on 17 September 2011 in Peace Park, which coincided with Foster Care Week. AbSec held a stall event and met with many locals who were out to enjoy the day. Linda Burney opened the event, with Johnny Huckle entertaining the crowd. The Taronga Zoo Mobile Bus delighted many with their snake, lizard, echidna and crocodile. Many community members were happy to find out about AbSecs role and services that we provide.
Foster Care Week – Dubbo
AbSec held a Foster Care Week Picnic for Foster Carers and families at the Dubbo Zoo park on Sunday 18 September 2011. Many children enjoyed meeting up with ‘The Bandit’ aka Matt White, who gained recognition for his performances on Australia’s Got Talent. A local Aboriginal dance group performed traditional dances for the crowd, clowns painted many children’s faces. It was great to meet with local staff from Community Services who came out on a Sunday, as well as other community who were interested in AbSec and information we provided.
