Burrun Dalai,located in Kempsey NSW, provides placements for Aboriginal children and young people. Burrun Dalai which means 'dream for children" recruit, assess, train and authorise Aboriginal Foster Carers.
Burrun Dalai Out of Home Care and Family Support Service was established in 1999 after consultation between the Department of Community Services (DoCS) and Aboriginal Communities of the Macleay area. Initially funded for 30 Out of Home Care (OOHC) placements for Aboriginal children from the Macleay it expanded in 2005 to include the Nambucca area.
DoCS consult with Burrun Dalai regarding Aboriginal children and young people who come into their care.Burrun Dalai provide ongoing training for DoCS Foster Carers and Aboriginal foster/kinship carers. Burrun Dalai advocate and inform Aboriginal Communities in relation to child protection and the OOHC system.
In 2006 they participated in the Aboriginal Capacity Building Project. In 2008 they began a 3 year expansion project with DoCS. By 2010 Burrun Dalai will expand to 50 OOHC placements, employ 10 staff and assume case management responsibility for the children in their care.
