Capacity Building for the Transition of OOHC

Capacity Building sits within the Transition Team at AbSec. The Capacity Building Officers are Barry Lenihan and Di Chapman. Both come from extensive backgrounds in the Public and NGO Sector working with Aboriginal communities across NSW in the fields of Health, Justice, Aboriginal Housing and Community Capacity Building initiatives.

The process was given the green light by the Ministerial Advisory Group (MAG) late in 2011 to take place over a ten year period in which AbSec has secured Aboriginal representation holding two of the 5 seats.

The Capacity Building project aims to build the strength in Aboriginal communities to support the development of up to 18 Aboriginal Community Controlled OOHC Organisations. Many of these services are in geographical locations where there is little or no service delivery of any kind. The emphasis is to build resilience, ensure proper planning and qualified skill development across the sector through direct consultation with communities, negotiations with existing agencies and potential organisations in both the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal sectors.
