Support Aboriginal organisations to build a stronger future
Thursday 29 March 2018
Last week we launched our #StrongerFuture campaign, calling on the public to support Aboriginal community-controlled organisations.
The campaign is rolling out across NSW TV screens and social media, highlighting the contribution made by our community organisations.
There are dozens of these groups, big and small, across our state; but they rarely receive the public respect and government investment they deserve.
“I can’t state strongly enough how important Aboriginal-owned services are to our families and communities,” said Tim Ireland, CEO of AbSec.
“Community-controlled organisations are trusted by our communities because they are independent, not-for-profit, and operated by local Aboriginal people. They are by the people and for the people.
“They are at the heart of their communities, and they should be recognised for their enormous impact.”
During March and April, we are calling on people to show their support for Aboriginal community-controlled organisations by signing their name at strongerfuture.org.au. Our online statement of support calls on the NSW Government to fund services for Aboriginal people through investing in Aboriginal-owned organisations.
“Australian governments spend a lot of money on programs meant to support Aboriginal people and close the gap, but most of that money isn’t going to Aboriginal organisations for our communities,” Mr Ireland said.
“When we are entrusted with the respect and resources to help our own kids and families, we believe we’ll accomplish a lot more.”
